Border Jumping, Playing Cards, Mayans, and Warm Weather - Week #1

Well, we have been on our trip for just over 4 days and it has been fantastic so far! The first full day in Belize we paid a visit to the town of San Ignacio where we will be staying for the bulk of the latter part of the Semester. We also saw the downtown area and then also some Mayan ruins nearby at a place called Cahal Pech.

The next day was Sunday so we went to the Church in the small town of Succotz where we have been staying. They did a joint Spanish/English service which was really neat. Since most Belizeans speak both English and Spanish they did a much better job than some other bilingual services that I have seen. After Church we took off for our four day trip to Guatemala. The border was definitely an interesting experience. We waited in line first to leave Belize, walked over to the next building and then through the second line to enter Guatemala. It took about two hours to get the group of 15 of us across.

One pleasantly surprising aspect of the trip has been the group from Kenyon College that joined us for the first part of January. Most of them are studying International Development and we have had a great time playing card games and getting to know some students from our neighboring college. We have already had some in-depth discussions about Belize, the Israel-Palestine conflict and South Africa to name a few.

Lastly, I need to announce to my friends and family who are snowed in and freezing that we too are suffering through some downright chilly temperatures in the upper 70's.
