Lions and Tigers and Tapirs oh my!

Well everyone, we made it! We have all arrived here in Belize safely and boy it is awesome!

After leving Miami this morning after our little dilemma yesterday (if you don't know what happened yesterday make sure to read my blog about it) we finally got to Belize around 12:30pm. We gain an hour and we are now 1 hour behind all you people back in Ohio or in that time zone. Oh and by the way I heard you're going to have a high of like -4° this weekend? Have fun with that and try to stay warm!  It shouldn't be to hard for us to do that. It was sunny and 75 for most of the day and then we have had some light to moderate rain this evening.

After getting off the plane today we headed straight for the zoo. It was such a neat place. It was not much different than what you would think as you typical zoo. Think about at like the Columbus zoo, you have what we would consider normal plants growing through out the walk way and animals(birds, ducks, squirrels,  and even an occasional bunny) running past you while walking from the "real" animals on exhibit. This was true at the Belize Zoo however because we are in a different part of the world those "normal" plants and animals are different. It feels like you are walking through a jungle when going from the different cages and habits. Instead of have hundreds of different types of animals they have a little less but a greater number of each of them and sometimes more than one exhibit for the same type of animal. There were many Tapirs in multiple places as it is Belize's national animal. Here is a link if you want to read more about them.

One walked right up to us and I was the only one brave enough to pet it.

He was really nice but then as we keept walking we saw a sight that said not to pet and it may bite guess I might have been lucky but he really seemed nice and just wanted some love, or something to eat? Here are a few more pictures of animals we saw at the zoo. Some you may know what they are and others maybe not so much.

It was such a neat place and we had so much fun walking around seeing all the different animals.

After the zoo we loaded back up in our van and continued west through Belize. The road system is different then what we are used to in the USA.  They aren't many rules, laws or traffic signs and if there were you would never know it. There are only really two main highways one running North and South and one running East and West. These highways are not what we think as highways though. They are more like the back country roads we are used to. Non-marked and very beat up. Because it is between election years the road become very poor condition and then come closer to election time they will get fixed in hope for better chances staying in office to those occupying the positions. The houses are a lot like what you see on tv or magazines. Some are very large and have like a plantation with cattle and horses however must are small concrete or wood huts and houses painted with lotsbof yellows greens blues and pinks/purples. It's neat to see the differen color arrangements they come up with for the houses. We went to a local shop/restaurant for dinner and the food was great! I had a typical Belize dish of beans and rice with chicken. It was very good and we will probably eat there again. From there we walked back up to where we are staying. We had already droped out stuff off there. The local people are very friendly and love to say hi and help if needed. We finally got settled back in and talked and reflected a little on the day. It's still raining but that's ok because it's very comfortable for sleeping. Tomorrow we will be out hicking and havimg fun getting to vist so waterfalls and the natural pools that they flow into. I really like it here and can't wait for the rest of the trip! It pretty late and time to get to sleep so I will wrap thing up for tonight and write again tomorrow.

Good night all,
Josh Aleshire
