Up up and.....nope still on the ground.

My first flight. Where to start? To say today was a long day would be an extreme understatement. The day stated with all the excitement of the trip. I got up around 3 and headed to meet the rest of the group at the airport.  After waiting in line for a little while we found out that due to a late arrival the day before our plane would be leaving late. With our flight being late it would mean missing our flight out of Miami to Belize. Luckly there was another flight going from Miami to Belize a litter later than the first one. We were able to change airlines and we were set to still make it to Belize today. At 8:20 we boarded our plan and waited for take off. Unfortunately in leaving later this meant time for the snow to arrive. As we were sitting on the plane the captain told us that due to the weather we would have to go through a de-iceing process and then would proceed with take off. The de-iceing took longer than it should have due to other planes needed it done too. We finally got done with the de-iceing only to find out that we had to go back to our gate to have our water supply changed. That didn't take much time and we taxied out on the run way. Moments before getting ready to take off the captin came over the speakers for yet another announcement. This time he was informing us that because of the time it took to de-ice and change water we had burned to much fuel and had to return to the gate a second time to refuel. Finally after sitting on the plane for about 3 hours we were able to take off.

It being my first flight I was excited for take off! I sat at the window seat right beside the wing and engine. I had the window up so I could watch as we took off. The engine started up and got louder and louder. They let of the breaks and off we went. After being in the air for a little bit I started to feel a little nauseated so I put the window down and started to watch Despicable Me on the tv in the back of the seat in front of me. The last time I had looked out the window all I could see was a wintery mess. Everything was just a white gray blur and you couldn't see anything. After watching the movie for a few minutes I decided to look out the window again. This was my view.

How in a couple of minutes did we go from a gross cloudy snowy gray morning to this amazing view. Cruising at 37,000 feet at a little over 400mph it was a completely different world from the one we had just left below us. After finishing my movie and taking a much needed nap we landed in Miami.

Off to Belize now right!?!?! Not quite yet. Because of the delay with de-iceing,  new water, and refueling we got to Miami late and we're not able to make our flight to Belize. Our group from Kenyon College flew a different airline and they have made it there safely. We got some vouchers from the airline and got dinner at Chili's and are staying at a hotel in Miami tonight. Tomorrow we will leave on a flight at 10 to finally make it to Belize and catch up with the group already there. It's been a pretty crazy day but has given us a lot of time to bond as a group and hang out and get to know each other more. We had fun playing Uno sitting on the floor at the airport trying to pass time while they sorted everything out. Now I'm just relaxing a little bit watching the Wisconson vs North Western basketball game and will get a nice night of sleep to be ready to travel again in the morning. Hopefully the next time I am writing it will be from Belize.

Until then,
Josh Aleshire
