Belize Day 2:

Belize Day 2

Well, today was an eventful day. I saw one of my biggest fears appear
before me right before my eyes as I went to the bathroom. It was none other
than a tarantula crawling on the ground. Around 6am today, I heard a guy in
the bathroom screaming because he found it first as he was using the toilet
so I went to go check to see what was wrong. When we got a few guys in
there, we took a container and put it over the spider so it could not move.
But that did not stop him there. It was moving the container when it was moving
so we had to put a bottle of shampoo on top of it so that it could not move
anymore. We left it there for the day while we went out hoping that it would not get
out.
After that terrifying event, we got breakfast in the cafeteria where some
women made us food. It is hard to explain what we had today but it was
considered their pancakes and they were so tasteful. Their pancakes were
better with some of their jelly. In certain spots in the pancakes, there are little
bubbles that is easy to put jelly in to get that delicious filling taste. They served
eggs and what seemed to be their string cheese. One of the things that I
already love about Belize is the food here. It is not only healthy, but it is food
that you always want to have for every single meal.
We then went to their shopping mall which was an outdoor mall that had
many gift shops and restaurants. I ended up getting my sister a decorated pin
and a necklace for a lady that helped me a lot to go on this trip. Most of their
shops had the same thing, but some of the shops were unique and had a
variety of goods. We also ended up having lunch there at the last minute. I had
a chicken quesadillas that was amazing. It had the perfect amount of chicken
and cheese on it and I could not get enough of it.
While leaving the mall, we decided to go to the Mayan ruins. We were
going to drive all of the way up to the place but that hill was going to be
impossible to over so we ended up walking it and that was a good workout.
When you go in to buy your tickets, they have many masks, and tools that they
used back in their time and a lot of history behind it all. We bought our tickets
and began to go down to the ruins. The Mayans were great at building these
ruins. I took many pictures and was amazed at all of the different structures.
They had a king's room where he would fit himself and many other women in
there with him. They also had a game field. Their game was usually played
between friends and they would typically play to win each others wife's, property,
to kill their "friends", or to kill themselves. The object of the game was to get a
12lbs ball into the net just like basketball only using your knees, elbows, chest,
stomach, and head. You can imagine it being a dangerous game. The way they
would kill themselves by playing is when there is a winner of a game, they are
sacrificed because they were considered the best and they would go join the
rain or sun god in paradise.
We then came back to the camp grounds to see if the spider was still
there. Thankfully, it was. Some of the guys wanted to let it free so they took it
outside and began to let it off into the grass. When it was on the grass, it
rushed over back into our dorm so we started to freak out a little bit. But one of
the guys took a big stick and finally killed it. Now I can maybe get a good night
sleep tonight knowing that we got one down.
As we were finishing dinner, a student from Kenyan gave a
presentation on the Palestine culture. One of the videos that he showed was
called 60 minutes and it was saying how many Christians there are in the Holy
Lands and how rapidly they are decreasing. It was a very interesting
conversation and I still cannot get all of it through my head yet because it was
so much information.
